Fluoride Treatments

Pretty Caucasian woman at the beach smiling at camera.

Did you know Adults benefit from fluoride treatments just as much as children?

New research indicates that topical fluoride given in office are very important in fighting tooth decay, sensitivity and all around strengthening adult teeth.

Conditions that may put adults at higher risk of tooth decay and would benefit from additional fluoride include:

Dry mouth conditions – can be caused by different diseases/syndromes, certain medications, head and neck radiation treatment. Lack of saliva makes an individual more prone to tooth decay by not allowing food particles to be washed away or allowing acids to be neutralized.

Gum disease – exposes more of your tooth and tooth roots to bacteria and acid attacks. Tooth root surfaces have no enamel to protect them, making them more sensitive and cavity prone.

Restorative care – consisting of a new cavity needing a new fill or crown every year or every other year could indicate that you are medium to high-risk patient and fluoride treatments can help prevent this. Having a lot of previous dental work can also benefit from fluoride by protecting the margins (where the edge of the fill or crown meet the tooth structure) of the restorative work.

Fluoride treatments done in the office are very quick and no mess! We apply a clear varnish that allows you to eat or drink right away with little restrictions to avoid hot liquids for half an hour. Application time takes less than 60 seconds to apply at the end of a hygiene appointment. Our varnish is very safe and gluten free!
